He will be deeply missed. ~ ~ ~ ~ OBITUARY: LeEarl Claude Baker, 58, of Farmington, New York died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at home with his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. LeEarl was born in Payson, Utah, to Glen and Crystal Brown Baker, both deceased. He played baseball, football, ran track, and lettered in wrestling in high school. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in art, and got his architectural license in 1977. When his sons were young he was chairman of the local Scout committee and coached coach-pitch baseball. LeEarl was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a 2-year mission in England from 1967 to 1969. He held many leadership positions in the Church. LeEarl was a long time resident of Utah where he was the Utah County Architect in Provo, Utah. He was active in local and county politics and was president of the Utah County Employees union. As principal of LeEarl Baker Architect, LeEarl worked as a project manager and as an independent consultant in Utah, Colorado, and New York. Some of his favorite architectural projects include the County Health complex in Provo, Utah, the town hall and fire station in Salem, Utah, the Westfall Road meeting house for the LDS church in Rochester, New York, the office / manufacturing facility for FSI in Farmington, New York, and the personal residence of Don and Marcella Burkard in Middlesex, New York. He always carried dollar bills to give to anyone who asked. The bell ringers got “a dollar going in and a dollar going out” at any store he entered. He generously tipped waitresses and garbage men. All services were private with interment at Boughton Hill Cemetery. The family suggested contributions may be made to the Victor Free Library, 15 West Main St., Victor, NY 14564 in his memory. Bruce and Patricia Barton
  • Home: 801-771-2690

Class of 1965. Bruce Barton. Football, Baseball, Drama Superior Region, Forensics, Forensics Manager, Forensics Undefeated Region & State, Forensics 1st at Weber Invitational, Newspaper Staff. BYU BA Theater & Cinematic Arts 1971. BYU MPA Institute of Public Management 1973. BYU JD Law 1975. He was born in 1947 in Preston, Idaho, moved to Troy, New York. His father, Cliff S. Barton, earned his Ph.D. from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I.). He was then hired as a professor at BYU to teach in the Civil Engineering department. The Barton family moved to Provo, Utah when Bruce was 12. After high school at Provo High and graduating from BYU High in 1965, he attended BYU on a debate scholarship. From 1966-68 he served an LDS mission to Australia. After his return, he rejoined the debate team and received a bachelor’s (B.A.) degree in speech communications from BYU in 1971. That year he also married Trish. While a student he won the university-wide Heber J. Grant Oratorical and Sloan extemporaneous speaking contests. He worked during his college years. While earning his masters and doctorate degrees, he worked as part-time manager of the Wilkinson Student Center at BYU. Following his B.A. degree, he entered the BYU School of Management and received his M.P.A. degree (Master of Public Administration) in 1973. He entered the J. Reuben Clark Law School charter class at BYU and received his law (J.D.) degree in 1975. He was the first graduate - having completed a three year program in just two years. After graduation he was hired as the first full-time city attorney for Layton, Utah. While in that capacity he was elected President of the Utah City Attorney Association. After ten years, he was asked to become the City Manager for Layton. He was there seven years and was named the 1991 Utah City Manager of the Year. He left the city and became President and Chairman of the Board of a non-profit corporation which owns four medical facilities in Utah (three skilled nursing and one intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded). For over twenty years he has had a general law practice with an emphasis on trial work and estate planning. Beginning in 1975, he has been a Kiwanis Club president; a county United Way president; and also ran for the state legislature (and lost). It was in 1984 that he introduced a Scripture Kit into the LDS market for serious students of the scriptures. It has evolved into one of the top professional study systems. Over the years, he has lectured on time management, risk management, management ethics, and constitutional law history. But he says his top interest is getting others excited about the scriptures. He has taught classes on studying the scriptures in the Church Educational System at the Salt Lake City Education Week and at firesides, Relief Society homemaking lessons, and at Scripture Kit Workshops. He has also led tours to Israel. His wife, the former Patricia Bradley of Bountiful, Utah, has lived in England and New Zealand while her father was on a church building mission program. Bruce met her at BYU where she earned her B.S. degree in Social Work. They have six children (two daughters: Alisa and Gina; and four sons: Paul, Kirk, Mason and Jay). All four boys have earned Eagle Scout awards and three have served missions, in Chile, Argentina, and Paraguay. Memories: Working on Junior Prom -- the thousands of paper flowers we made, decorating for the dance, everything done with class members are treasured memories. Going to school every day is also a choice memory -- Transferring from a predominantly non-Mormon school, I loved coming to BY High where I would hear conversations in the hall, lectures in class, or as we gathered around the main hall, about Mutual or Seminary. It was so nice to be around peers who shared the same values I had. To not smell smoke or alcohol in the classrooms and halls, to have teachers who were examples I could look up to, and to be around peers who could have so much fun doing good things, was such a refreshing change from the school environment from which I had come. @2005 & @2009. @2010
