Class of 1944. Clarence Jones. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Clarence Stewart Jones 1926 ~ 2005. Clarence Stewart Jones of Los Altos, California, passed away in Santa Clara, California on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 of complications of heart disease. He was born in Rigby, Idaho on August 21, 1926. He was raised in Provo, Utah, where he graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. Clarence enjoyed an illustrious career as an engineer, businessman and entrepreneur and was instrumental in starting two companies in the Silicon Valley: ESL Inc., and ADAC Laboratories. He also served on the board of directors of several companies, including Quantic Industries, and Space Power, and held many patents. He was a devoted husband of 56 years and a loving father and grandfather. He was active in the Los Altos Heritage Oaks Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He rendered service to many and was a generous philanthropist. Clarence is survived by his wife, Meredith Hanseen Jones; brothers R. Bruce Jones (Carol) of El Dorado Hills, California; Jerry Jones (Calleen) and Ronald Jones (Judy) of Orem, Utah; son Randall C. Jones of Ashland, Oregon; daughter Marjean Livingston (Clyde) of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter Susan Garside (Blake) of Oceanside, California; six grandchildren and three spouses and three great-grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, March 12, 2005 in Los Altos, California. Friends and family gathered for graveside services on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Springville Evergreen Cemetery at 1997 S. 400 E., Springville, Utah. Sam was born in American Fork, Utah, and grew up in Provo, Utah, with his parents, Lydia and Sam, sisters, Evelyn, and Emily, and brother, Jack. Sam had a happy childhood during the depression, and graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944, just in time to join the Army and be sent to the European theatre in the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. Returning from the War in 1946, he entered Brigham Young University. He married his longtime sweetheart, Joyce Mower [also BYH 1944], September 10, 1947, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After graduation from BYU, he entered dental school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He moved with his family to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1954, and began a career in dentistry. He was passionate about his profession and kept up with the most progressive techniques. He enjoyed singing with the Octavos, working in his church responsibilities, accompanying Joyce singing on the piano, and playing the organ. Sam spent a great deal of time helping others, especially through local church positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a bishop, stake high councilor, member of the Grand Junction Stake Presidency, and Stake Patriarch for many years. He and Joyce served two missions for the LDS Church after retirement. Sam and Joyce had five children, Steve (Connie), Kathy (Don) Jensen, Tom (Tracy), Vicki (John) Hodgman, and Camille (Brad) Swenson. They taught them a love of hard work, music in all its forms, sports (BYU--go Cougars), education, love of country, and especially love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sam loved his 19 grandchildren, and tried to keep up with his 58 great-grandchildren. He was revered and loved by all. Our Dad will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years; brother, Jack (Susan) Kelly, and his children and grandchildren. Graveside services will be Friday, May 6, 2016, at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 10:00 a.m., followed by services at 1:00 p.m. at the Grand Junction West LDS Stake Center. Joyce was born in Provo, Utah, to Edgar "Ted" Mower and Luella Oldroyd Mower. She was raised along with her sister, June, and brother, Bob, in Provo, graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. She was heavily involved in music and dance during her childhood and teenage years. Vocal music remained a passion throughout her life. While attending BYU for college, she began seriously dating Sam Kelly following his release from the 42nd Rainbow Division of the Army at the end of WWII. The long-time sweethearts were married on September 10, 1947, in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After Sam's graduation, they moved to Washington, D.C. so Sam could attend Dental School at Georgetown University. While there Joyce worked as a secretary at the Senate Office Building. In 1954, following Dental School, they moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, and established a loving home and dental practice. Joyce quickly became involved with the music community. In addition to numerous vocal solo performances at various venues around Grand Junction, she played the part of Hansel in the Humperdinck opera, "Hansel and Gretel", and also the lead role of Celia in the Crawford Gates musical, "Promised Valley". She had a beautifully well-trained soprano voice. Often she was accompanied by her husband, Sam, on the piano, and music naturally became a big part of their family life. She was active in the Grand Junction Music Club and served on the board of the Grand Junction Symphony. Joyce and Sam had five children, Steve (Connie), Kathy (Don) Jensen, Tom (Tracy), Vicki (John) Hodgman, and Camille (Brad) Swenson. They taught them how to work hard, a love of music, sports, education, and the country, but most of all a love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Joyce had an extremely busy Gospel-centered home. She served in the Church many years as a young women leader, teacher, ward chorister, and choir leader. She and Sam served two full-time missions for the Church after retirement. She loved her children, 19 grandchildren, and 55 great-grandchildren, and could often be found supporting them at their various events. She and Sam flourished together for 69 years, and after his passing in 2016 she sorely missed him. We are blessed to believe she is back with him. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Grand Junction West Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Class of 1944. Lee Campbell Knell. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Lee Campbell Knell died March 5, 2006, 16 days before his 80th birthday. He was encircled by his wife, siblings, children and grandchildren at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center following a stroke. Lee was born March 21, 1926 in Provo, Utah to James Claudius Knell and Mazie Campbell Knell. "He might be envied by a king" for he was a faithful Mormon boy who read all the standard works of scripture before graduating from the BYU Junior High and Brigham Young High School. While still in his teens, Lee manifested considerable talent as a self-taught cartoonist and commercial artist. He was also a state tennis champion. Lee served as an enlisted man in the Navy during World War II and as an officer in the Korean Conflict. While in the service, Lee studied architecture with Louis I. Kahn at Arizona State University; he earned a B.A. in Math and Fine Arts from Brigham Young University and graduated with honors from the University of Utah with an MFA in Architecture. He worked in the Church Architect's office in 1960 and in private practice as Lee Knell and Associates until his retirement in 1999. Utah is peppered with public and private buildings that reflect his fusion of High Modernist and Japanese sensibilities. The youthful Elder Knell was called to preach the Gospel to the Japanese communities of Hawaii, then a part of the Central Pacific Mission. Lee later served as a High Councilor, as Bishop of the Pleasant View 6th Ward, as a Counselor in a Stake Presidency and as a Branch and District President at the Missionary Training Center. Funeral services were held Friday, March 10, 2006 in Provo, Utah. Lee is survived by his wife Jewell Cloward Knell; brother John J. "Jack" Knell [BYH Class of 1942] (Ginny) Los Altos, California; sister Claudia Knell Young, Provo; children Rebecca Stum (Richard), Mt. Pleasant, Utah; Scott C. Class of 1944. Alice LaBerteaux. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER HUSBAND'S OBITUARY: Lee Roy Stewart. Memorial services were held on January 9, 2007 in Brookings, Oregon, for Lee Roy Stewart, 77, who died of cancer December 29, 2006, at his home in Harbor, Oregon. Mr. Stewart was born September 6, 1929, in Bell, California, to Margaret and Earnest Stewart. He was raised at Lake Tahoe and attended schools in Carson City, Nevada. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945, and traveled around the world while in the military. He was honorably discharged following four years of service. Lee Roy Stewart married Alice La Berteaux on October 28, 1948, in Reno, Nevada. Mr. Stewart was self-employed and performed a variety of jobs, mostly related to carpentry during his working years. The Stewarts moved to Harbor, Oregon in 1990, where he enjoyed the climate, loved to ocean fish and owned his own vessel, the Oh My. He met a lot of fishermen and enjoyed visiting with them. The couple enjoyed traveling in their motorhome. He was a friend to all and was always helping someone in need. Mr. Stewart had recently accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He is survived by his wife, Alice Stewart of Harbor; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Stewart's ashes will be scattered at sea near a favorite fishing spot. [Tahoe Daily Tribune, January 17, 2007]

Class of 1944. Barbara Lambert. Barbara Lambert first married James Keith Jolley, and they lived in Payson, Utah, where they raised their family. James Keith Jolley was born on July 4, 1926 in Provo, Utah. His parents were James Ambrose Jolley and Mary Emma Gillespie. He died on June 26, 1995. Barbara Lambert Jolley second married David Nielson, and they lived in Provo, Utah. Barbara passed away in Provo, Utah, on May 21, 2015 at age 88. ~ ~ ~ ~ Barbara Lambert's parents: Asael Carlyle Lambert and Florence Smith Ballif. A.C. and Florence Lambert had six children: James E. Lambert; Carlyle Ballif (C.B.) Lambert; Barbara Lambert [BYH Class of 1944] (twin); John Lambert (twin, died from scarlet fever when four years of age); Ruth Lambert; and Edith Lambert. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Barbara Lambert Nielson passed away on May 21, 2015 at the age of 88. She was born on October 12, 1926 to Asael C. and Florence Baliff Lambert, in Provo, Utah. Barbara attended school in Provo, graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. She first married Keith Jolley. Together they had five children: Jim, Judy, Paul, Paula, and Jay. Barbara and Keith were later divorced, and Barbara married David Nielson. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Asael C. and Florence Ballif Lambert; husband, David Nielson; children, Paul, Jim Jolley and Judy Neff; brothers, Jim, John, and Carlyle; and sisters, Ruth Roy and Edith Nielsen. She was survived by her daughter, Paula (Floyd) Hone of Payson, Utah; son, Jay Jolley of London, England; 9 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Class of 1944. Zola Rae Law. Student Body Secretary, 1943-1944. She married Cecil Grant Ash. Her parents: Reuben Deem Law (19 Mar 1903 - 19 Apr 1981), and Leda Ethelwyn Call Law (3 Dec 1901 - 17 May 1973). Zola and Ceil had four children: Terry Kay Ash; Allyn Ash; Dayle Ash; and Cozanne Ash. @2005 ~ ~ ~ ~ HER FATHER: Reuben Deem Law, born March 19, 1903, died April 19, 1981) was the first president of the Church College of Hawaii (CCH) (1954 – 1959) which much later was renamed Brigham Young University – Hawaii (BYU–Hawaii). Law was born in Avon, Utah and raised on a ranch and farm. He married Leda Ethelyn Call in 1925 in Logan, Utah and they had five children. While in Logan, Law graduated from Brigham Young College and Utah State Agricultural College, receiving a Bachelors degree in history and education. He later attended the University of Southern California where he received a Masters Degree in Education and Educational Administration, followed by an Ed.D. in teacher education in 1941. Law's career began as an elementary school principal in Box Elder County, Utah. After teaching some high school, he became the first principal at the consolidated South Rich High School in Randolph, Utah. After one year, he became the county superintendent, where he served for six years in the 1930s. He then briefly served as superintendent in Duchesne County School District before joining the faculty at Brigham Young University in 1936. Law was appointed Dean of BYU's College of Education from 1946 to 1954. Three years after becoming LDS Church president, David O. McKay felt inspired that the Church should establish a college in Hawaii. Although Law had just finished building a new home in Provo, Utah, he accepted the invitation to plan the new school and to be its first president. He wanted to "turn President McKay's vision into a reality." Eric B. Shumway, BYU–Hawaii's president fifty years later, said Law was "a man of strong character, [who] wielded a firm hand" and held an "absolute and fervent testimony of President McKay's calling as a prophet, seer, and revelator". Some contemporaries also saw him as a strict or authoritarian figure. With no preexisting facilities, Law led the survey committee to investigate potential attendance and locations. Although Law recommended the school begin in Fall 1956 in Honolulu, the population center, McKay decided it should be on Church-owned property in Laie, and should open soon as possible, in September 1955. In the complex work of urgently organizing a new junior college "from scratch", Law was given "direct access to President McKay on nearly all matters concerning the college, including budget, thus bypassing much of the bureaucracy and red tape of the Church". The school began in temporary buildings with 20 faculty and 153 students, which rose to 250 students by the end of Law's term. Law resigned in 1959 to accept a position in Southern California, and he was replaced by faculty member Richard Wootton. In the 1970s, Law served on the Utah State Board of Education, which he chaired from 1976 to 1977. He was also a temple worker in the Provo Temple in the 1970s. Law was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which he served as a bishop, a counselor in a stake presidency, and a member of the church's Sunday School General Board. Law's wife Leda died in 1973 and later that year he remarried to Lue Groesbeck. In 1981, Law died at the age of 78 in Provo and was buried in Logan.

Class of 1944. Thomas Wilford "Tom" Lee. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Professor Tom Lee died January 1, 2016. He was born July 2, 1926 in Pocatello, Idaho to Wilford D. Lee and Lorine Elizabeth Stender Hutchinson Lee. Reared in Provo, he graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. Tom continued studies at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah in Physics and Astronomy. He taught at Utah Valley University for 28 years. Tom married Carolyn Thompson in Salt Lake Temple September 21, 1951. He served an LDS mission to Argentina. He served as bishop of the Groveton Ward in Alexandria, Virginia, and again in the Provo 9th Ward. Their children: Bob (Penny), Becky (deceased), Betsy (Ellis) Bailey, Ben (Becky), Barbara (David) Acheson, Bill (Elena), and Bonnie. 24 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren. Former UVU instructor moved 34 times during life to chase space by Genelle Pugmire, Provo Daily Herald reporter.

Tom Lee helped give many different wings the gift of flight. He was a quiet man, but his steady-as-she goes attitude and kind heart was in fact the wind beneath his family’s and friends' wings. His life didn’t start as well as most; he was born July 2, 1926 in Pocatello, Idaho. He had ulcers on his legs. Many months during his youth he was confined to bed rest. Stuck in bed reading was the vehicle for this adventurous spirit to see the world and universe. “His mind was always active and his interests varied,” said Barbara Lee Acheson, a daughter. “He especially loved astronomy and all things in space. If you ever needed to know the answer to a question, dad seemed to know everything thanks to his voracious reading." Acheson said that at one point in his youth, his legs were so sore and infected with tumors that a team of doctors broke the news to his parents that Lee would need amputation of one of his lower legs. “This news was unacceptable to my grandmother,” Acheson said. “She would not have it. Her will and her faith in a priesthood blessing that my dad received was nothing short of a miracle. Instead of amputating his leg during the surgery, just a toe was removed.” Tom attended Provo schools and graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1944. He excelled in science, math and reading. He continued his education at BYU, followed by a masters at the University of Utah, then back to BYU for doctoral studies in physics and astronomy. Lee grew up to loving nature, both the earth below his feet and the heavens above him. He particularly loved Mt. Timpanogos and camped and hiked that mountain nearly every year of his life since he was a young boy. For most of his grown up life his heart and career were spend discovering the vastness of outer space. But his heart couldn't follow his career dreams, until he was first married to the girl of his dreams — Carolyn Thompson. He was introduced to Carolyn about 65 years ago when Lee was preparing a returned missionary get-together. A friend, Benny Mortensen, told Lee he had just the girl to help. “The introduction went kind of like this," according to Acheson, “'Hey Tom, I want you to meet Carolyn. She can sing, dance and play the piano.' Mom chimed in '… and I can cook and sew too.'” Evidently it worked and Lee told her she was the girl he had been looking for, and he asked her to marry him right there. Nine months later, they married in the Salt Lake Temple. They had seven children. J. Robert (Bobby), Rebecca (Becky) who sadly died at birth, Betsy, Benjamin Bowen (Benny), Barbara (Barby), Wilford Thomas (Billy) and Bonnie. Using his love of nature and space, Lee pursued a career as a physicist. He worked with NASA in the 1960s on the moon space missions at the Manned Space Craft Center. He work in research and development and because of his inventions and research, he worked on special projects throughout the United States. That meant the wherever dad went, mom and the children moved too — about 34 times. According to Acheson, every child graduated from a different high school in a different state. “Here are some of the places dad worked,” Acheson said. “NASA, The Naval Research Labs, Denver University, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Hill Field and of course UVU. Each move my parents would treat as a mini-mission.” While at Hill Air Force Base, Lee worked on the Minuteman Missile project. However, it was his last job that Lee said he loved the best. For the past 25 years, as a semi-retiree Lee has been teaching Astronomy classes at Utah Valley University. At his retirement last July at age 89, Lee was the oldest instructor at the university. For all of that, Lee was most proud of his family and their accomplishments. “All his kids served LDS missions, including Betsy and Bonnie who currently sing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir," Acheson said. "All his kids graduated from college, many with advanced degrees.” In the end, Lee simply became too weak to teach, play or do all of the wonderful camping and climbing things he had done throughout his life.

“Those close to him knew that he had an inner-expiration date of 2016,” Acheson said. “He has been telling us about this for the last five years. In fact, when he dedicated Mom’s grave in March of 2011, he included in his prayer, “I’ll see you in five years.” Well, Dad got his wish. He died in his sleep at 2:20 a.m. New Year’s Day. Class of 1944. LaVern Liston. LaVern Liston was born on June 25, 1926 in Salina, Utah. Her parents were Murcel Dollbell "MD" Liston and Elvera "Vera" Matilda Gregerson Liston. LaVern married Earl Myers Clark on June 3, 1945. LaVern Liston Clark died on March 11, 2008 in Mesa, Arizona.

His parents: Lycurgus William Mitchell (born 1890 in Manassa, Colorado to James Warner Bosnell Mitchell and Nancy Willmirth Johnson) and Beatrice Maeser (born 1890 in Beaver, Utah to Karl Frederick Reinhard Maeser and Sarah Caroline Shepherd) were married September 23, 1914 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They lived in a number of towns in Southern Utah until they moved to Provo in 1926. Their children included: Joanne Mitchell (Allen) Colledge; Irene Mitchell; Clara Mitchell (born 1918, died 1920); James Maeser Mitchell [BYH Class of 1938] (born 1920, died 1997) (married Mary Veone Hopkins); Paul Maeser Mitchell (born and died in 1921); Harold Maeser "Hal" Mitchell [BYH Class of 1941] (born 1923, died 1992) (married twice); John William "Jack" Mitchell [BYH Class of 1944] (born circa 1926) (Belva) Georgia Mitchell [BYH Class of 1945] (born 1927, died 2000) (Donald) Jones; and Mary Mitchell [BYH Class of 1951] (born circa 1933) (Thayne) Murray. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: John W. "Jack" Mitchell. January 12, 1926 ~ July 6, 2016. Jack was born in Spring Canyon, Utah, to L.W. and Beatrice M. Mitchell, the fourth of seven children. Jack grew up in Provo, graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. He volunteered to serve in the Navy after graduation, serving in the Pacific during World War II. In 1947, Jack married Belva Menlove; a marriage that endured nearly 70 years through five children, more than 20 moves, and Alzheimer's disease. Jack earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Utah, and a master's in electrical engineering from the University of Arizona. Over the course of his 40-year career, he designed instrumentation and controls for rocket motors, nuclear reactors, and power plants. Grandchildren brought Jack and Belva back to Utah after retirement. Papa Jack loved small children, and even with Alzheimer's disease, he doted on every baby and toddler he met. He loved his family most, but golf was his other love, and to his credit, he never played winter rules. Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Belva, and his children Ellen, Christine (Tom Malloy), Joan, and John (Laura), as well as his sisters JoAnne Colledge (Al) and Mary Murray, 10 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Ann, brothers James and Harold, and sisters Irene Mitchell and Georgia Jones. At Jack's request, his family will hold a private celebration of his life. Married Wanda Brown [BYH Class of 1944]. ~ ~ ~ ~ The son of BYU's Alonzo John Morley, PhD [Speech Pathology] and Eloise Stewart Morley. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Stewart Alonzo Morley, 87, of Provo, Utah, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2013 in Provo, Utah. Known by "Stew" to many, Grandpa was born in Provo, Utah to Dr. Alonzo John Morley and Eloise Stewart Morley on June 27, 1926. He married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Brown, on April 1, 1945 in Overton, Nevada while serving in the Army Air Corps. Stewart and Wanda were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Stewart was a graduate of BY High School, Class of 1944, and was captain of the football team. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Brigham Young University. Stewart was a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and gave many years of devoted service assigned to many posts throughout the country including Kansas City, Missouri, Minneapolis, Minnesota, San Francisco and Stockton, California, finally retiring to his home town Provo, Utah in 1982. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stewart served in many capacities and leadership positions. He is survived by his beloved wife Wanda of 67 years, eight children, Terry (Teena), Tony (Taia) Camille, John Edward (Mary), Isaac, Eric, Bradley (Carey), Becky, and 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as sisters Marilyn Washburn, Diane Hellstrom, Janet Taylor and brother Dr. Gerald Morley. Father, Dad, Grandpa was an example to all by his willingness to tackle any project and see it through to the end. His quiet strength and loving devotion to his family has given solace to many in times of need and crisis. Wanda Brown Morley, 89, of Provo, Utah quietly slipped from her mortal sojourn on June 13, 2015 into the welcoming arms of her late husband, Stewart [also BYH Class of 1944]. She was surrounded by family. Wanda - wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma - was born in Provo, Utah to Paul (Pa) and Helen (Mom) Brown, February 10, 1926. She married her high school hero, Stewart, on April 1, 1945 in Overton, Nevada while he was serving in the Army Air Corps. Wanda and Stewart were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. A graduate of BY High School, Class of 1944, Wanda was active in many organizations and activities, notably as a drummer in the marching band. She later earned a nursing degree becoming an obstetrics Registered Nurse while raising eight children. A devoted wife and companion to her husband, together they lived in many locales during Dad’s tenure as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation including Dallas, Texas, Kansas City, Missouri, Minneapolis, Minnesota, San Francisco and Stockton, California, finally retiring to their home town of Provo, Utah in 1977. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wanda served in many capacities and callings including girl’s camp nurse. Wanda was preceded in death by husband, Stewart and brothers, Billie and Stanley. She is survived by eight children: Terry (Teena), Camille (Phil), Tony (Taia), John Edward (Mary), Isaac, Eric, Bradley (Carey), Becky; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and younger sisters, Pauline Knight and Helen Clegg. Never one to call attention to herself, Mom achieved much yet always boasted the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. To the end she read widely and voraciously consuming several books a week. A listening ear, a soft shoulder, Mom provided a warm, inviting home and refuge — especially when her cinnamon rolls and rice pudding were in the oven. Joyce married Sam Kelly, who also graduated in the Brigham Young High School Class of 1944 ~ ~ Grand Junction Colorado - The two stakes in the Grand Junction area recently performed the drama "Moroni," written by Newell Dayley and Ralph G. Rodgers Jr. Three performances were held before large, enthusiastic audiences in the William Robinson Theater at Mesa State College. Directed by Joyce Mower Kelly, the musical had a cast of 170 and culminated following six months of preliminary work that included preparing vivid costuming, a full orchestra and scenery depicting temples and landscapes of Book of Mormon lands. Moroni was portrayed by Aaron Marsh and Mormon by Monte McCall. [Church News, August 1993] ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Joyce Mower Kelly August 2, 1926 - October 17, 2018. Joyce was born in Provo, Utah, to Edgar "Ted" Mower and Luella Oldroyd Mower. She was raised along with her sister, June, and brother, Bob, in Provo, graduating from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944. She was heavily involved in music and dance during her childhood and teenage years. Vocal music remained a passion throughout her life. While attending BYU for college, she began seriously dating Sam Kelly following his release from the 42nd Rainbow Division of the Army at the end of WWII. The long-time sweethearts were married on September 10, 1947, in the Salt Lake City Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After Sam's graduation, they moved to Washington, D.C. so Sam could attend Dental School at Georgetown University. While there Joyce worked as a secretary at the Senate Office Building. In 1954, following Dental School, they moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, and established a loving home and dental practice. Joyce quickly became involved with the music community. In addition to numerous vocal solo performances at various venues around Grand Junction, she played the part of Hansel in the Humperdinck opera, "Hansel and Gretel", and also the lead role of Celia in the Crawford Gates musical, "Promised Valley". She had a beautifully well-trained soprano voice. Often she was accompanied by her husband, Sam, on the piano, and music naturally became a big part of their family life. She was active in the Grand Junction Music Club and served on the board of the Grand Junction Symphony. Joyce and Sam had five children, Steve (Connie), Kathy (Don) Jensen, Tom (Tracy), Vicki (John) Hodgman, and Camille (Brad) Swenson. They taught them how to work hard, a love of music, sports, education, and the country, but most of all a love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Joyce had an extremely busy Gospel-centered home. She served in the Church many years as a young women leader, teacher, ward chorister, and choir leader. She and Sam served two full-time missions for the Church after retirement. She loved her children, 19 grandchildren, and 55 great-grandchildren, and could often be found supporting them at their various events. She and Sam flourished together for 69 years, and after his passing in 2016 she sorely missed him. We are blessed to believe she is back with him. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Sam was born in American Fork, Utah, and grew up in Provo, Utah, with his parents, Lydia and Sam, sisters, Evelyn, and Emily, and brother, Jack. Sam had a happy childhood during the depression, and graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1944, just in time to join the Army and be sent to the European theatre in the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division. Returning from the War in 1946, he entered Brigham Young University. He married his longtime sweetheart, Joyce Mower [also BYH 1944], September 10, 1947, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After graduation from BYU, he entered dental school at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He moved with his family to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1954, and began a career in dentistry. He was passionate about his profession and kept up with the most progressive techniques. He enjoyed singing with the Octavos, working in his church responsibilities, accompanying Joyce singing on the piano, and playing the organ. Sam spent a great deal of time helping others, especially through local church positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a bishop, stake high councilor, member of the Grand Junction Stake Presidency, and Stake Patriarch for many years. He and Joyce served two missions for the LDS Church after retirement. Sam and Joyce had five children, Steve (Connie), Kathy (Don) Jensen, Tom (Tracy), Vicki (John) Hodgman, and Camille (Brad) Swenson. They taught them a love of hard work, music in all its forms, sports (BYU--go Cougars), education, love of country, and especially love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sam loved his 19 grandchildren, and tried to keep up with his 58 great-grandchildren. He was revered and loved by all. Our Dad will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years; brother, Jack (Susan) Kelly, and his children and grandchildren. Class of 1944. Eldon Mauray Payne. HIS OBITUARY: Eldon Mauray Payne passed away Sunday the 20th of May 2007 at the age of 81. He is survived by his sweetheart of 56 years, Bertha Ellen Lyman Payne; eight children, Marsha Payne Hatch (Barry), Jeanette Payne Masters (Gaylerd), Steven Payne (Marbara), Eldon Payne (Rosemary), Alane Payne Day (Tom), Diana Payne Mehlhoff (Trent), Jay Marion Payne (Lori), David Payne (Shannon); 32 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and his sister, Donna Payne. Mauray is the son of Eldon Woodruff Payne and Melba Fern Sanderson. He was born the 22nd of June 1926 in Provo, Utah. After graduating from Brigham Young High School in 1944, he served two years in the Navy in WWII, and two years on a mission for the LDS Church in South Africa. He married Bertha Lyman the 19th of March 1951 and they graduated together from BYU in June of 1951. Mauray has worked in Radio Broadcasting in Provo and Cedar City Utah, several years in State Farm Insurance, and 29 years for LDS Family Services. The last 9 years of that time were spent in directing the LDS adoption program in Arizona. He has served as Bishop's counselors, high councilman, Director for the Extraction program, Temple Ordinance Worker and Trainer, Ward Mission Leader, and received the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award. He served missions with his wife to LDS Family Services, and to the Navajo Indian Reservation. He has been responsible for genealogy and extraction work and especially for gathering family histories and publishing a Payne Family History for the family of his grandfather, Edward Payne. Mauray is loved and cherished by his children, grandchildren, many friends, and relatives. Viewing and funeral services were held previously in Mesa, Arizona.
