We have read the American Heritage School's detailed explanation, and their amazing timeline of history that they have invented for their school. In the past they have claimed to be the literal successor of Brigham Young Academy and Brigham Young High School. Several years ago, the alumni of Brigham Young High School learned of some of these institutional genealogical claims, and we wrote a warm and positive feature story about it on our website [www.byhigh.org] with links to the AHS website. No story in the history of our website has received so much response. In three months we had an overwhelming response against their version of history. In the light of this response, we removed all mentions of AHS school from our website, with this exception, and we have promised not to mention the school and its claims again. We wish them well and are supportive of AHS, its ideals, moral standards, and its achievements. However, the issue of whether the alumni of BYH recognize AHS as an historical descendant of BYH (we cannot survey our Brigham Young Academy high school alumni because they are all deceased) has long been settled, at least as far as the official BYH alumni website is concerned.

Unknown if he attended BYH. Glen Michie Allen, a man of integrity and honesty, passed away June 7, 1999 in St. George, Utah, after a valiant battle with lymphoma. He was 79. Born August 31, 1919 in Tabiona, Utah, Glen was the second son of Robert Ernest and Genevieve Michie Allen. He was educated at Brigham Young University, Provo High School, Farrer Jr. High, and Brigham Young Academy [note: BYA ceased to exist in 1903 - usually an entry like this refers to B.Y. High School. According to his age, he might have graduated from high school about 1937], and joined the U.S. Air Force in August, 1941. A B-26 Marauder bomber pilot in World War II, Glen served in England and France with the Ninth Air Force, eventually achieving the rank of Major. As a pilot, he was awarded both the Presidential Citation and The Distinguished Flying Cross; the two highest honors given. He flew a total of 65 bombing missions, often leading box formations. Glen was employed for 27 years by the Federal Aviation Agency as an air traffic controller, supervisor, and administrator at the Salt Lake City Airport. He retired in 1974. He married Helen Ward in Stockton, California March 17, 1942. She died August 27, 1982. Glen is survived by their children Anita (Robert) Snyder, Janet (Jeff) Cannon, Mary Allen (John Toner), Rick Allen, and seven grandchildren. Glen married Norma Jean Crookston Benson September 26, 1987. They made their home in St. George, Utah. Glen is survived by his wife and her children, Jeanine Wiebe, Holly (Kent) Tarbert, James (Elda) Benson, Clint (Wylene) Benson, and 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Glen was an active member of the LDS Church, serving as Executive Secretary to three different bishops in the Quail Valley area. Graveside services were held at the Provo City Cemetery, Wednesday, June 9, 1999. A memorial service in Glen's honor was held Saturday, June 12, 1999 in St. George. She was born October 18, 1918 in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of A. Lorenzo and Vera Pierce Anderson. She married Dennison Emer Romney April 3, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. Marguerite and Dennis have four children, Gayle Durrant (Olani) of Laie, Hawaii; Deanne Williams (Kent) of Orem, Utah; Dennison E. Romney II (Lisa); and Dr. Lorenzo M. Romney (Nancy) of Greenwood, Missouri. They have 28 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Marguerite is also survived by brothers, A.L. Anderson, Jr.; Robert P. Anderson of Salt Lake City; Clyde L. Anderson of Rialto, California; and sister, Rinda Robinson, serving a Mexico City Temple mission. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Vera Lenroot. Marguerite attended school in El Paso, Texas and Brigham Young Academy [Brigham Young Academy ceased to exist in 1903. Actively involved she also served in leadership positions in school and civic organizations in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she and her husband, a respected farmer, lived and reared their family for 37 years. Class of ?? ~ Honorary. Beth Marie Bennett Willardson passed away suddenly on Dec. 14, 2001 in Spokane, Washington of a cerebral hemorrhage. DOB? She was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah to Amanda Marie Gleason Bennett and Sterling John Bennett. She grew up in Provo, attended Brigham Young Training School and Provo High, and graduated with high honors from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in chemistry, the second woman ever to do so. Beth married Robert Kent Willardson September 12, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they moved to Ames, Iowa, where she did graduate work in chemistry and served as a graduate instructor. They then moved to Columbus, Ohio, where their older two daughters were born. In 1960, they moved to southern California where a third daughter was born. They built their dream home in Arcadia, California. After twelve years there, the family moved to Spokane, Washington, where they have resided the past twenty-seven years. Beth dedicated her life to her family. She adored her grandparents and devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. She emphasized to her daughters the importance of women's achievements and inspired all three to pursue graduate education. Beth was proud of her pioneer heritage and spent many hours doing genealogy work. She was a member of AAUW, the Democratic Party, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A strong-minded and brilliant woman, she followed current events closely and loved films, flowers, her pets, and long drives in the country. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Spokane; daughters Amanda Marie (Terry) Ballou of Chelan, WA, Ann (Richard) Engar of Salt Lake City, and Jennie Lynette of Spokane; brother Sterling John (Marilyn) Bennett of North Salt Lake; and three grandchildren. She was born March 12, 1903, Provo, a daughter of Alfred Lewis Booth [BYA High School Class of 1886] and May [Maria] Ashworth Booth. She attended the BYU Training School, attended school in California, and later attended Brigham Young University. She was raised by a loving stepmother, Edith Young Booth. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Relief Society, Primary, MIA and as a ward librarian. She had served a mission to the Northern States 1925-27. She had worked as librarian at the Provo City Library for over 30 years until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the Yesharah Returned Lady Missionaries, the Nelke Club and Daughters of Utah Pioneers. After her retirement she spent 1 1/2 years in Bolton, England, and took short trips to the Continent and British Isles. She returned home via Persia and Japan, circling the world. She did considerable genealogy work and temple work while in England. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Lowell (Leona) White, Provo; a half-brother, Thornton Y. Booth, Logan; three half-sisters, Mrs. Wendell (Virginia) Allred, Provo; Mrs. Donald (Margary) Neville, Kaysville; Mrs. Carlos A. (Phyllis) Phillips, Provo; numerous nieces and nephews, to whom she was like a third grandmother. Services were held Friday, April 5, 1991, in Provo. Burial: Provo City Cemetery. Years of attendance not yet known. Alice Bown. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Alice Mildred Bown Johnson. Provo, Utah; Salem Oregon - Alice was born in Provo, Utah on May 29, 1919 to Emma Newell and J. Leo Bown. The youngest of five siblings, she spent her summers riding horses and playing house in the sandstone formations of the Utah badlands on the family ranch. Her mother insisted they come back to town during the fall and winter so they could attend formal schooling. Family has been Alice's rock during good times and bad. She married Rulon Johnson on August 29, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were divorced in 1968. They had four children, Jeff, Julie, Ella and Brenn. The family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1953 where Alice supported Rulon through dental school and worked for Portland Public Schools first as a secretary then as a librarian. She was a terrific cook, wonderful seamstress and appreciative of nature and she taught her children to be resourceful and creative. She moved from Portland to Hawaii in 1967 where she worked as a "Kelly Girl" in Honolulu and then became librarian for a private school on the island of Oahu. In 1969 she moved to Grand Junction, Colorado to be near her sister, Emmy, and other family members. She became an administrative assistant for Mesa Junior College for 15 years. This job gave her superb organizational skills and a venue to shine. She retired in 1984 and devoted her full time to her family. In October 2001 she moved to Salem, Oregon where she resided until her passing on July 14, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Newell, Bud, and Casey Bown, her daughter Julie Kristian and grandson Brandon. Surviving are son Jeffrey Johnson and wife Ann of Salem, Oregon; daughter Ella Johnson and husband Gary of Salem, Oregon; daughter Brenn and husband Mark Luff of Grand Junction, Colorado; her sister Emmy Meacham and husband Ray of Grand Junction, Colorado; nine grandchildren, and other relatives. She was the sweetest of mothers and was loved dearly by her children and extended family. She will be greatly missed. He was born May 21, 1923 in Provo, Utah to William Bown and Hattie Andersen. He married Margaret Hales on December 27, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children: Stephen, Isabel, David, and Ann and nineteen grandchildren. During World War II Delos enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served in England as a navigator-bombardier flying in a B-17. After the war he returned to Provo where he studied chemistry at Brigham Young University. After earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree at BYU, Delos continued his education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated from MIT with a PhD in organic chemistry. During his professional career Delos worked for Exxon in Texas and later for Polychrome Corporation in New York as a research chemist. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Delos loved Scouting. As a boy he was a Sea Scout and as an adult he served many years as a Scoutmaster. His hobbies included woodworking, tending his rose garden, fishing, skiing well into his 70’s, playing cards and reading. Delos was also an expert handyman; he could fix anything. Delos was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and his eight brothers and three sisters. A graveside service will be held at the Provo City Cemetery on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 pm. Class Unknown? Doren Daniel Boyden, age 98, passed away peacefully, June 6, 2006. He was born July 11, 1907, to James William and Mary Graham Lockhart Boyden, in Provo, Utah. When Doren was eight years old, the family moved to a ranch in Wallsburg, Utah. Doren enjoyed many choice experiences on the ranch and began his lifelong love of the out doors. He attended schools in Provo, Wallsburg, and Heber. He then attended BY Academy. [Note: BY Academy ceased to exist in 1903; he attended either BYH or BYU.] This prepared him for his job at Mountain Bell Telephone Company, where he was employed for 38 years as a supervisor over various departments. He met and married his sweetheart, LaRella Provost; they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1928, and were married for 63 wonderful years. She passed away in 1991. He later married Lydia Young Stout; she passed away in 2005. His life was full of service to others. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, including Bishop of the Provo 4th Ward, was on the Stake High Council and as a Provo Temple worker for many years. Doren and LaRella served two full-time missions: to Australia and Texas. Doren was a man of many talents. He enjoyed life, traveling, was a rock hound, square dancing and calling, farming and gardening. He enjoyed horses and making jewelry. He shared his talents generously with his family and everyone he met. He is survived by two daughters and one son: Carol Klauck, of Springville; Connie (Reed) Boshard, of Provo; Gary (Diane) Boyden, of Murray; 12 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. She proudly served her country in the US Navy during WWII. She is now reunited with beloved husband of 58 years, Mark S. Howe. She is survived by her son Steven M. Howe (Peggy), Chandler, Arizona, and daughter, Kristine Adams (Ronald), Casa Grande, Arizona. "Babe" Shipman, 91, peacefully left this world on May 22, 2011 as a beloved husband of LouAnne of nearly 65 years and father of five children. Babe took over the family tradition by operating one of the oldest businesses in Provo, Provo Bakery. For over 50 years he brought joy to many in the Provo community with his delious baked goods. He called Provo his home from birth through 1991 when he and his wife moved to the Phoenix area to retire. For those of us lucky enough to have known and loved him, he will be missed as part of our daily lives and part of our holiday dinner table and post dinner card games. He truly was an amazing man, loved by all who knew him. BYH Class Unknown? Fae Burch. She married Wesley F. Knudsen. -- @2001. HER OBITUARY: Fae Burch Knudsen passed away peacefully October 25, 1999 at home. She had been suffering from acute leukemia. She was born December 12, 1918 to William Hilton and Estella Bradford Burch in Provo, Utah. She married Wesley F. Knudsen February 17, 1937. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple February 18, 1938. He died June 17, 1994. Her children are Kent (Charlotte Smith) Knudsen, Karen (Gary) Henderson, Kristine (Newt) Andrus, Karla (Tom) Womble, Kurt (Rebecca Clark) Knudsen, and Knute. She is grandmother to 30 and great-grandmother to 16. She is survived by two brothers, Bill and George Burch, and her sister, Lois Burch Morgan. Fae actively served others all her life. She was Primary, Mutual and Relief Society President and was a temple worker for 6 years. She loved her family and friends. Ruth Bushnell. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Brigham City - Ruth Bushnell Parry, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 4, 2006 at Brigham Nursing and Rehab Center from natural causes. She was born on October 7, 1919 in Meadow, Utah, a daughter of Isaac Ernest and Edith Ann Bennett Bushnell. She attended the Brigham Young Academy. [Note: Brigham Young Academy ceased to exist in 1903. This either refers to BYH in abt. 1937, or BYU in about 1941. She does not appear in a BYH yearbook.] She married Conway Evelyn Parry on December 27, 1939 in the St. George Temple. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1999. Ruth was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brigham City 17th Ward. She served in various ward and stake callings in the church. She also was a member of various clubs, DUP and she sang in many choral groups. Her first loves were her husband, children, and grandchildren. She also loved to sing, garden, sew, knit, handiwork, cooking, camping, dancing and candy making. Surviving are her four children, Douglas C. (Chris) Parry, Syracuse; John B. (Sherlyn) Parry, Orangevale, CA; Camille (Clare) Olsen, Brigham City; Niel E. (Shannon) Parry, Woodland Hills, UT; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 11, 2006 in Brigham City. Interment, Brigham City Cemetery. BYH Class Unknown? [Probably not a BYH alumnae.] Karlyn Chatfield. OBITUARY: Karlyn Chatfield Russon, age 84, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2003 after a long illness. She was born May 26, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Arthur Kelsey and Naomi Felt Chatfield. Karlyn was raised in Lehi, where she married her childhood sweetheart, Milton W. Russon on September 19, 1940 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He passed away April 10, 1997. Karlyn was educated in Lehi and attended The Brigham Young Academy [Note: Brigham Young Academy ceased to exist in 1903. The BYA reference is to BYH or BYU. Since she does not appear in BYH yearbooks, we assume this to refer to BYU]. Devotion to her husband, children and faith dictated Karlyn's priorities her entire life. She lovingly stood by her husband's side in their many church duties. Karlyn served as Temple Matron of the New Zealand Temple, Stake Relief Society President, Mission Mom in the Southern Australian Mission, and teacher. Additionally, Karlyn served as District Governor of La Sertoma. Our mother will be greatly missed by her five children and their spouses: Milton W Jr. (Becky), Kolene (Ken) Webb, Brent (Dianne), Scott (Sherry) and Paulette (Nephi) Bierwolf; her 27 grandchildren and 30 great grand-children. Also survived by a loving brother Kelsey (Lois) Chatfield; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert (Josephine) Chatfield; Dale and Mava Russon, Leo and Esther Russon. Preceded in death by her husband, brothers Spencer and Robert and an infant sister, Barbara. Funeral services were held Monday, November 3, 2003, in the Val Verda Second Ward. Student at BYU Training School in about 1918-20? ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Ina Louise Coleman Page died on February 2, 1998. Ina was born on June 13, 1905 in Park City. She was the third child of Louis and Louise Johnson Coleman. She lived her first five years in Park City, after which she moved with her family to Provo. She attended school at the Brigham Young High School Training School and Parker Elementary. She graduated from Provo High School in 1924. She attended BYU for two years where she received her teaching credentials. Her first teaching positions were in Daniels and Heber City. She married Joseph Albert (Bert) Page on June 12, 1930 in Provo. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple in 1954. They began their married life together in Provo and in 1937 moved to Pleasant Grove. Ina and her husband owned and worked together on a farm and orchard, raising strawberries, fruit trees and animals. Ina also supported her husband in his role as Pleasant Grove City Attorney for many years. Ina returned to teaching in 1943. She taught a total of 32 years including her years at Central School in Pleasant Grove, and Sharon and Edgemont Schools in Orem. She was a wonderful dedicated teacher who was deeply committed to the education of young people. She prided herself in following the progress of her students throughout their lives. In 1954, she received a bachelors degree in education from BYU, graduating with her daughter, Betty Jo. Ina was active in the LDS Church and served in the MIA for several years. Her husband preceded her in death in 1981. Since that time. Ina felt that one of her greatest fulfillments was that all 14 of her grandchildren have or will graduate from college and were married in the temple. Ina is survived by her two daughters: Betty Jo Page-Davis, Orem; and Margene Page Edwards, Hurricane; one son-in-law Wayne Edwards, Hurricane; 14 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Afton Ostler, Austin, Texas; and Darlene Mitchell, Provo; one brother, Dean Coleman, Provo. Verne was born September 12, 1928, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He met Grace Eleanor Colton at BYU and they married in 1955. They have been married 45 1/2 years. Verne was a devoted father and husband. He loved the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He served many years as a Church mission leader and missionary, ward clerk, Sunday School President, Cub Scout Leader, Singles Leader, home teacher, and as an ardent worker in the Provo Temple. Verne is survived by his wife and his sons: Edwin, Tony, and James; and his daughters: Michelle Berrett Burton, Laura Berrett Pead, Louise Berrett Madsen, Julie Berrett Hollingworth and Ginger Berrett Seaman. He is also survived by brothers, Richard H. Berrett, William Brian Berrett and sister, Sharon Berrett Stark, 20 awesome grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her husband of Pleasant Grove; two sons and a daughter: Mrs. Terry (Dorothy Lou) Gasser, American Fork; Randy C. Colton, Salt Lake City; Christopher Colton, Richfield; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 21, 1993 in American Fork, Utah.
