Ghost Classes of BYH 411

Class of 1980? If Brigham Young High School was closed in 1968, why are classes 1969 through 1980 included in this website? The closing in 1968 affected many students from Kindergarten through 11th Grade who had planned to attend and graduate from BY High. They were all forced to leave and complete their secondary education elsewhere. At the request of many who were students in those years, the classes of 1969 through 1980 have been added to this website directory as honorary alumni of BY High School. Sometimes called the "Ghost Classes" of BY High, all of them -- K through 11 -- were included in the historic final BYH Wildcat Yearbook published in 1968, along with the final graduating class of 1967-1968. Before that, students who attended BYH but who did not graduate with their classes were also marked as honorary alumni.

BYU JD Law 1985. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: John Evan Barrus returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday, September 28. He was born on December 1, 1954, to George and Merlynn Barrus, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The third of eight children, John was raised in Utah, attended Brigham Young Elementary, and graduated from Provo High School. He married the love of his life, Anna Leesa Stanley, in the Provo LDS temple in 1978. John earned a degree in accounting from BYU followed by an MBA from the University of Washington, and a Juris Doctor from BYU law school. He worked as a self-employed attorney in both Fresno and Roseville, California, doing estate planning for the past 27 years, a job he truly loved. His life was marked by service and love toward all. As a young man, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions in the church, including as a bishop and a stake president. One of his favorite opportunities was working with youth, especially in the Boy Scouts. John loved Sunday walks, Calvin ball, and running, especially with his kids. He enjoyed backpacking, read avidly, and was always trying to learn. He rarely sat still, yet he had time for everyone. He was a child at heart but the best of men. Though loved by all who knew him, he will be especially missed by the family he leaves behind. John is survived by his wife, Anna Leesa, his son Steve (Sunny), his daughters, Emily (Nate), Katie (Drew), Kristy (Steve), and Brianne. He was loved by his ten grandchildren as well. He is also survived by his parents, siblings, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. Darais, Christina Marie

Darais, Christina Marie
Salt Lake City, Utah US

Christina and Edwin Oberbeck

Class of 1973. Christina Darais. BYU 1992. Married Edwin Oberbeck. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Christina Darais Oberbeck, January 19, 1955 ~ February 4, 2015. Christina Marie Darais Oberbeck departed this life peacefully on February 4, 2015, after courageously fighting a rare lung disease for nearly a decade. Christina was born to Alexander and Norma Darais in Provo, Utah, on January 19, 1955. Christina was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Norma Darais. Christina is survived by her husband, Edwin Charles Oberbeck, her son, Alexander Edwin Oberbeck (age 17), her daughter, Isabella Christina Oberbeck (age 11), her siblings, Norman (Judy), Christopher (Vicki), Marcus (Debbie), Thomas (Suzanne), Andrea, and Damon (Stacey), her two brothers-in-law, Steven (Carolyn) and Kevin (Cathy), and many nephews and nieces. Christina graduated from Provo High School in 1973 and attended BYU with an emphasis in art and English, in which she achieved high marks. While in the art department she met a fellow young artist, Edwin Charles Oberbeck, to whom she was married August 5, 1978; subsequently, they resided in the Salt Lake City Avenues most of their married years. Christina and Edwin found opportunities to travel, sometimes aided by Christina's employment at Eastern Airlines. Their trips included Greece — with its abundance of artistic and cultural heritage. There she was also able to spend time with her dear cousin Aglaia and other Greek relatives. Christina had a great love for literature, poetry, music, and the visual arts. On another trip to Europe, she was struck by the beauty of a Bonnard painting and burst into tears. Edwin and Christina's lives fit well together in that they were able to share so deeply in their appreciation of the humanities — they encouraged each other in their art creations. Christina's passion for the arts was exceeded only by her devotion to her beloved Edwin, Alexander, and Isabella. Like her mother Norma, Christina was an exceptional cook and baker. She was the family member who could most closely replicate Mom's legendary recipes. Happily a vegetarian, she had the knowledge and skills to make healthy yet tasty dishes. Guests to her home enjoyed her sweetness, warmth of character, and sumptuous entrees — served complete with antique china, fine linens, and often by candlelight. Christina's quilts and handiwork showed her artistic touch as an interior decorator and seamstress; her creative eye was apparent in her lovely herb, iris and rose gardens as well. True to her given name, members of the family often commented about her Christlike qualities. She was our family angel. The debilitating illness that would gradually take her life strengthened her resolve to put others first and make their challenges the topic of discussion rather than hers. During many difficult years, she shared what was savory, bright, and delightful. For all these things we hold her in dearest remembrance. A graveside service will be held to honor Christina, prior to her interment, on Friday, February 13, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Salt Lake City Cemetery, southwest area (near Main Street and 280 North). https://www.premierfuneral.com/obituaries/Christina-Oberbeck-23208/#!/Obituary

Hugh and Sheryl DeHart

Class of 1973. Hugh DeHart. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Hugh Quincy DeHart, Woodland Hills, Utah — Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Hugh Quincy DeHart passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2014. Hugh was born in Payson, Utah on October 29, 1955 to Louis and Virginia DeHart. He attended Brigham Young Elementary, then graduated from Provo High School, and served honorably for two years in the South Carolina/Georgia mission. Hugh met and married the love of his life Sheryl while attending Brigham Young University. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple for time and all eternity, on June 3, 1977. Hugh spent endless hours serving, and was the first bishop of the Woodland Hills ward, where he was loved by all. He had a great love for the Boy Scouts of America program, even earning the illustrious Silver Beaver award. A kind and caring man with a wry sense of humor, he loved his family, and was perfectly content just being at home with them. An outdoorsman with great attention to detail, he loved planning backpacking trips for his family. He was a handyman, who found joy by working on projects in the home and the yard — if he came across something he didn’t know how to do, he’d read up on it, learn all he needed to know, and complete the project. He was a man with a great love for music and the theater, and always had a musical score playing in the background. Survived by his wife Sheryl, kids, Matthew (Megan), Adrienne, Dane, Heather and Devin. Siblings, Guy (Vonnie), Dennis (Shirley), and Brian (Dawn, Lani (Joseph), and Hali (Lee), and grandkids, Lincoln, Landon, Lawson and Emmery. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Virginia DeHart, sister Cathy Young, and brother Craig DeHart. Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 5th at 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel located on 220 S Woodland Hills Dr, Woodland Hills, UT 84653. Interment, Salem City Cemetery. Source.
