Bigelow [BYH Class of 1947] (Suzanne), of Salt Lake City, Utah. ~ ~ ~ ~ HER OBITUARY: Afton Bigelow Miller, 88, of Pleasant Grove passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009. Afton was born October 7, 1920 in Provo to Parley Percival and Margaret Meldrum Bigelow. Afton attended both Provo and BY High School, and graduated from BYH in the Class of 1938. She then attended and graduated from BYU where she was a student body officer. Afton met her beloved Keith at BYU. After his mission to Canada, they married on September 2, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. She managed the Grove Theater while Keith was serving in Europe during WWII. She loved teaching elementary school and did so for 20 years. Afton had a life-time of serving in teaching and leadership callings in the LDS Church. Our mother emphasized with her family the importance of the Gospel, family, and education. After retirement, she and Keith served missions in Nigeria and Ghana and also in the newly built Dallas Temple. Upon their return, they served in both the Provo and Mt. Timpanogos Temples. Her cheerful, positive, and grateful personality and words of encouragement will be greatly missed by her family. She is survived by her five children: Margaret Ann , Wayne (Loralee Priday), Linda (Paul Johns), Gloria (Alan Stratton), Helen (Alan Warnick), 27 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren; siblings: Richard Bigelow and Ruth Wilsted. Afton was preceded in death by her husband Keith; brothers, LaVell and Joseph; granddaughter, Bethany Warnick and great-grandson, Aaron Clark. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Timpanogos Stake Center, 800 North 100 West, Pleasant Grove. Friends may attend a viewing Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to services. He was born October 2, 1920 in Payson, Utah to Adelbert and Flora Ethel Huish Bigler. He married Beth Prestwich in 1939, later divorced. On April 28, 1977, he married Verna Burr Kinsey, later divorced. Mark lived most of his life in the Provo area, attended Lincoln High School, then graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1938. He served in the Marine Corps, participating in the invasion of Okinawa. Mark had a lifelong devotion to music, as a performer, conductor, arranger, and composer. He continued to read and learn throughout his life, engaging others with his ever-youthful enthusiasm and wonderment at the world around him. His music, laughter, and wisdom will be missed by those who love him. Mark is survived by three children: Bruce Bigler, California; Marie Bigler Bergeson, Arizona; and Cindy Lee Bigler [Gladwell] of Ogden, Utah. His two brothers, Walter H. Bigler (Mimi) of Monterey Park, California; Adelbert H. Bigler (Darlene) of Bountiful, Utah; and Christine Bigler Greeson of Monterey Park, California, and his cat "Shiney." He was born to the late William Shirley and Verna Johnson Black, January 8, 1921 in Ammon, Idaho. Vern graduated from Brigham Young High School, Provo, in 1938. He served in the US Navy Aug 1942 to May 1946. He completed a BS degree in accounting at Brigham Young University, in 1947. He was employed as an accountant at Standard Oil and Pepsi Cola. Vernal was married to Wanda Cummings Black (deceased) and to LaRee Matthews Black, his partner for 36 years. He is also survived by children: John Black (Seattle, Washington); Kathleen (Christopher) Gamble (Salt Lake City, Utah); and Lisa (Robert) Bruce (Hansville, Washington). He had 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Richard (Judy) Black (Eugene, Oregon); and siblings: William Shirley Black Jr; Karl Black; Nyta Giles; LaVeive Breckenridge; Maurice Black; and Herman Black. Vern was a gentle, intelligent man. He loved oil painting Utah landscapes, teaching oil painting at senior centers, and fishing with his small boat on Strawberry Reservoir. He also enjoyed playing tennis, shooting pool, and skiing. A graveside service was held Monday, September 30, 2013 at Larkin Sunset Gardens 1950 East 10600 South Sandy, Utah. Boyden Boshard] married John Henry Boshard in the Logan Temple in Utah. We lived in a two-roomed house belonging to his brother Dolph [Boshard]. In the same summer the house burned down, so we moved over to the corner of first north and fifth east for a short time. In October of the same year we moved close to Mother in the Meldrum house. Our first child was born there. -- Clarence was born on the fourth of November. The next spring we moved over into Grandmother Boshard's house and stayed there until we could build our own home. -- James Rudolf Boshard was born while we were still living at Grandmother's. He was born January twentieth 1889. [Note: He married Nellie Jones, then he died February 3, 1920, at about the age of 31.] We built two rooms in 1890 and moved into our own home. -- February twenty-sixth 1891 Marie was born. I nearly lost my life with septecemia. The Elders administered to me and the poison left me and entered Brother Bennet's arm and I got well again. In 1892 my husband was called on a mission to Switzerland. I was left with three children, two boys and a girl. While Harry was away on this mission, I took a nursing course, which helped me a great deal in raising my family. In the fall of that same year, I was seriously ill with typhus fever. They had to send for Harry. Apostle J. W. Taylor and White of Salt Lake opened a mission in Denver. And in December 1895, Harry was again called on the mission field to Denver. In the fall of 1895 my husband went on a tour with a quartette. They traveled all through Utah, singing for the Republican party for six weeks they sang Govenor Wells into the chair. -- On the tenth of April 1896 Casper LeRoy was born. -- Next in 1898 twenty second of May, Arnold was born. -- Viola Meredith Nov. 8, 1900 -- Geneveive Apr. 22, 1903 -- Hayden Boyden Aug. 31, 1905 -- Erma Elaine Oct. 25, 1907 -- Paul Lowell Feb. 28, 1910 -- Edna Sept. 19, 1912 ~~ In the year of 1912 my last daughter was born. I was now the mother of twelve children. Six girls and six boys. In 1814 I took up nursing and I made lots of nice friends. I had splended success with my nursing, in all the time I was nursing I never lost a mother, and only one baby and that was caused by the baby being born with cancer. I helped to bring seventy one babies into this world. During the first winter after the first World War [on February 3, 1920], I lost my son Dod, with the flu. He left a widow [Nellie Jones Boshard] and three children, Maxine, Verda, and the baby James Rudolph. That was a terrible winter everywhere. Class of 1938. Chester Brown. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Chester Lawrence Brown departed this world for the next one on Sunday morning, March 4, 2012 at his home in St. David, with his wife by his side. He was born in Duncan, Arizona on December 29, 1919, the 11th of 13 children. Most of his growing up years were spent in Chuichupa, Colonia Juarez and Colonia Dublan, Mexico, where he attended school. He also attended Mansfield Junior High School in Tucson while living with a brother, and graduated from Brigham Young High School in Provo, Utah in 1938. When the family moved to Pomerene, Arizona, he met and married Clea Curtis, his wife for 70 years. Chester served in World War II, in the U.S. Navy, as a gunnery instructor. Following the war, he came back to Pomerene, where he purchased a small dairy farm and he and Clea raised their family. Later, he worked for Arizona Department of Transportation, and he and Clea moved to St. David, Arizona, where they had a small farm, raising crops and later cattle. Chester was always a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop of the Pomerene Ward for four years, and he and Clea served as missionaries in Florida in the early 1980s. They served together as workers in the Mesa, Arizona Temple for 11 years. He and Clea also served several times as stake missionaries, serving in Elfrida and Tombstone, Arizona. Chester was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He is survived by his wife, Clea Curtis Brown. He is also survived by his six children: Spencer (Jeanine), James (Terry), Curtis (Sheryl), Marial Mortenson (Dale), Mark (Emalene), and Randall (Judy), 44 grandchildren and 84 great-grandchildren. Chester will always be remembered by family and friends for his sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services were held in the LDS chapel in St. David on Saturday, March 10, 2012. She was born November 24, 1918 in Provo, Utah. She married Gilbert Earl Wootton on February 28, 1940 in American Fork, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Annie attended schools in Provo, and graduated from Provo High School [or BYH?]. She is survived by her son, John G. Wootton of Alpine; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born Nov 10, 1895, Irma was the third born, but first surviving child, of Richard Franklin Shumway and Margret Hannah Johnson. She attended school in Tropic and Panguich, Utah. She married James Austin Cope, Sr., May 24, 1916 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their tourist camp three miles north of Bryce Canyon National Park. In the fall of 1940, they moved to Spanish Fork, where she worked with her husband in the operation of the Spanish Fork Livestock Auction. She served faithfully in all the auxiliary organizations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attended the temple faithfully. She served a Stake Mission and she and her husband served a mission in Australia. Irma was an avid reader and started oil-painting at the age of 80. She always had a beautiful flower garden and worked in it until age 98. She was a charter member of the USHARA Club, member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, American Legion Auxiliary and the Centenarian Club. She was the oldest Gold Star Mother in the nation. She is survived by her children, Clyda Cope (Veon) Smith, Sherwood, Oregon; James Austin (Florence) Cope, Jr., Spanish Fork; Evan (Jeanne) Cope, Bountiful; Ray (Renee') Cope, Springville; Donna Cope (Clark) Nelson, Salem; Margaret Cope (Orin) Daley, Spanish Fork; and Beth Cope (Thomas) Peterson, Pleasant Grove. She was preceded in death by her husband; and two sons, Bernard Cope; and Lloyd Cope, who is survived by his wife, Kathleen. One of Geneva's sisters is Phyliss Daniels [Mrs. Bernard Oberhansley. Geneva Mary Daniels of Roosevelt, Duchesne County Utah, married Lyle Jay Larsen of Whiterocks, Uintah County, Utah, in Vernal, Uintah, Utah on February 24, 1940. "Pvt. Lyle J. Larsen of the US Army took his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He was recently home on furlough after which he reports back to Fort G. Meade, Maryland. She was born December 15, 1919 in Ogden, Utah to William Orville Facer and Olive Esther Harding Facer. She was the 3rd of four children. She grew up in Provo, Utah during the Great Depression. She graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1938. She then graduated from BYU in four years with honors and went to work. She taught English at Payson High School and Spanish Fork High School. Early in her career she was the school secretary at Provo High. While working there, she met Ralph Andrus. They were married on May 15, 1946 in the Salt Lake Temple. A few days later he left to serve an 18 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She continued working at Provo High until he was released from his mission. They settled in Spanish Fork where they raised their family of six children, 5 daughters and 1 son. Though she loved being a mom, she went back to school to renew her teaching certificate and returned to teaching English in 1962. She and her husband, who was also a school teacher, retired from teaching in 1983. They were called to serve a mission in the West Indies in 1985. The call was extended soon after the mission was opened, and they had some wonderful ground-breaking experiences in St. Kitts and Antigua. She served as Relief Society President in their mission. She also served as Ward Relief Society President and on the Stake Relief Society General Board in Spanish Fork. Mom and Dad later served as temple workers in the Provo Temple. The gospel, her family, and her Savior were the most important things in her life. Her favorite scripture was, "And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent." She is survived by her husband, Ralph; their children, Ruth (Jim) Little, Seattle, Washington; Sue (Wally) Blackhurst, Bountiful, Utah; Cali (Stephen) Fish, Spanish Fork, Utah; Mary Anne (Richard) Hillier, Salt Lake City, Utah; Ralph H. (Vicki), Nauvoo, IL; and Crista (Dallin) Slaugh, Renton, Washington. She has 36 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister, and one grandson. Alsina Elaine Holbrook Haymore passed away peacefully with family by her side on April 22, 2015. She was born in Provo, Utah on August 11, 1920 to Alsina Elizabeth Brimhall and Lafayette Hinckley Holbrook. Elaine was born the youngest of 11 children in Provo, Utah where she was much loved by her parents and eight doting sisters and two brothers. Known as “Tiddlywinks” by her dad and one of the “three little kids”, she had fond memories of attending Brigham Young High School, Class of 1938, while living in the clinker brick house, and was taught to cherish her pioneer ancestry and LDS Church membership. After a semester at Brigham Young University she married John Arnold Haymore and moved several times before they finally settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived at her present address for 65 years. The center of Elaine’s life has always been her children. Each of her seven sons and six daughters has been a blessed event for her, a fulfilling of her purpose on earth. And to them, she gave her full time and devotion. During the four years in California Valerie was born during World War II. Desiring to be in a safer environment, the family moved to Salt Lake City where all other children were born, spanning 22 years of her life. All sons experienced opportunities for work both in construction and paper routes. All daughters learned homemaking and secretarial skills. Education was strongly promoted in this family and all of the children either graduated or attended some years of university by having part-time jobs and scholarships, married in the temple, and all sons served missions for the LDS Church. After her divorce, Elaine worked as a secretary at various offices including many years at the LDS Church office building, to support the children remaining at home. Elaine’s church callings included teacher and temple ordinance worker. She will be remembered as the one who handed out programs at church during her final years, enduring well to the end. Even though she was limited in hearing she managed to comprehend what was said at church, often reading lips and body language to do so. With a ready smile and encouraging pat on the arm, she greeted everyone even to a few hours before her quiet passing. Always conveying her interest in those around her, she wanted little of possessions, but cherished relationships. She did so love lilacs and walks, and photos of grandchildren, and holding hands and chocolates. Her legacy to her numerous posterity will be one of faith in Jesus Christ, be forgiving, listen to the Holy Ghost, and remember your baptismal covenants to help others on their way. What a gift this mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister was. We let her go reluctantly but joyfully look forward to a reunion someday. Drama. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Grant Jacobsen, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, June 24, 2008. Grant was born August 25, 1920 in Provo, Utah, to Albert Jacobsen & Sarah Estella Collins. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1938. He married Thelma Duncan January 1, 1943. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. He was called to serve in World War II in February 1943, where he spent one year in Texas and Michigan and two years in the European Theater as a military policeman. Before entering the service Grant worked for Union Pacific Railroad and Chase Ice Cream Company in Provo. After returning from the war he worked at Zion's Upholstery for a while, but had to quit because of his health. He later worked as a general contractor where he built several homes and apartments in the Salt Lake area. He retired in 1970, and enjoyed the rest of his life with his wife and family. He dearly loved them all. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, son Dennis (Marianne) Jacobsen, and daughter Lana (Rod) Swearingen of Durango, Colorado, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers (Vernon and Sheldon), and three sisters (Blanche, Lothiel and Avis). He married Joan Berg, BYH Class of 1939 on September 25, 1942 in Chico, California, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They were high school sweethearts. Together Burke and Joan raised four children in Bountiful and Holladay. After retirement, Burke and Joan moved to Midvale where they made new friends and stayed in contact with many old acquaintances. Burke D. Jenkins Burke passed away in 1997. ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Burke Douglas Jenkins, age 77, died Thursday, July 31, 1997 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Born on February 25, 1920 in Provo, Utah to Clayton Jenkins and Nettie Douglas Jenkins. He was a great-grandson of the pioneer William Clayton. Burke married Joan Berg, BYH Class of 1939, on September 25, 1942 in Chico, California, later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Burke attended schools in Provo, graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1938, and from Brigham Young University in the Class of 1948, with a degree in Business. He also graduated with an Engineering degree from the University of Utah. Burke was employed and retired from Sperry Univac/Unisys after 25 years. He was also employed at the University of Utah. In March, 1941, he left Provo with the Medical Attachment of the 145th Field Artillery, transferring later to the US Army Air Force. He received his pilot's wings and became a commissioned Air Force Officer at Luke Field A.F. Base in May 1942. For two and a half years, he served as a pilot instructor at Chico A.F. Base. He received training as an Air Force fighter pilot in Portland, Oregon and Van Nuys, California, and served as a World War II P-38 pilot in the South Pacific until he received an Honorable Discharge in November 1945. Burke D. Jenkins was a member of the LDS Church and served in many callings including as a member of the Bishopric, Sunday School Superintendency, teacher, and for many years, he worked with the Boy Scouts. Many young men will remember their first scout camps and rafting trips under Burke's guidance. He was an accomplished piano player, and he cherished music - especially jazz and the classics. He loved sports and played competitive tennis in college. He had many memorable moments on the golf course and was active in the Unisys Golf Association. He is fondly remembered for building tree houses, flying kites and for spending countless hours with his grandchildren. He was a good son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed. Burke Jenkins is survived by his loving wife, Joan, to whom he was married for almost 55 years; daughters, Susan Jenkins (David) Osborne, Pine, Colorado; Catherine Jenkins (Charles) McAbery, Ogden, Utah; and son, Richard (Vicki) Jenkins, Fruit Heights, Utah; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Tammy), Kelli and Richard Osborne, Andrew, Erin and Meghann McAbery, Clayton and Jamie Jenkins; great-grandchild, Ashlee Osborn.
