He mustered up courage and told the new principal, Benjamin Cluff, Jr., of his financial troubles. Cluff had him take care of cows and chickens, chop wood and keep lawn cut, telling him, "You can board with us, but we have no place [for you] to sleep." Prof. McKendric loaned him a bed out of his loft, and he slept in a small room in the Academy. He studied in Room D. He later batched with other boys going to school, finishing in 1893. He worked as a teacher and principal in Scipio, Juab and Levan. In 1900 he entered BYA for another year. In 1901 he became a teacher of the 8th grade in Nephi, Utah for two years. He then became a professor of Education at BYU, teaching until 1944, when 71 years of age. Served on many state boards. BYU AB 1913; BYU MA 1923. One year of graduate work at USC and two summer schools at Berkeley. As a student he knew Karl G. Maeser, and worked under 5 BYU presidents: Cluff, Brimhall, Harris, McDonald, and Wilkinson. His three children went to BYU from kindergarten to college graduation. 1) Melva B. Boyle, BYH Class of 1922?, married Laurence H. Hutchings, Salt Lake City. 2) Wilma S. His parents were George Frederick Jarvis and Eleanor Cannon Woodbury. Orin married twice: first to Alice Anna Young on August 5, 1903 in Salt Lake City, Utah -- she died on October 22, 1926, in Sacramento, California; and second he married Della May Hibbert of Mesa, Arizona, on January 17, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah -- she died on May 8, 1981 in Santa Cruz, California. Orin W. Jarvis died on December 30, 1960 in Fresno, California. His interment, Sacramento, California. ~ ~ ~ ~ Orin Woodbury Jarvis was the third child and the next to-the oldest son in a sturdy pioneer family which, at the request of Brigham Young, helped to colonize southern Utah in the early days of Utah history. He was called on a mission to the Southern States in 1897, where he suffered many trials and persecutions; being mobbed, stoned, shot at and poisoned with strychnine. On his way home at the close of his mission, he stopped in Salt Lake to call on a cousin, Alice Cannon, who worked in the Deseret Bookstore. She introduced him to her best friend, Alice Anna Young, who also worked in the bookstore keeping books. After continuing home to his family, he later returned to northern Utah and attended Brigham Young Academy. He was able to pursue his friendship with Alice Young, and married her on August 5, 1903 in the Salt Lake Temple. In Provo, where Orin attended school, he also taught the first missionary training class there. He worked as a farmer running an experimental farm in Nevada. He began to realize that he wasn't as interested as he had thought in actually farming himself and raising crops. What he wanted to do was to teach others how to do it. He realized that he needed more education for that kind of work so he decided to go back to school. He borrowed money and attended the Agricultural College in Logan, now Utah State University. With his wife and four children he moved again in September 1914 and was in Logan for three years. The Jarvis family lived in a little house at 445 N. 4th East, which was within walking distance of the college. When graduation was approaching, he obtained a job in California working for a sugar company at Tracy, where he was to supervise the sugarbeet fields. He left about a month before graduation, and the rest of the family went to California on the train when school was out. They lived in Tracy for about a year, then moved to the little village of Knightson, so he could be closer to his work. In November 1918 they moved to Sacramento, where Orin had been appointed County Farm Advisor, a position he held for over a year. After living in Sacramento for two or three years they moved to 3921 lst Ave, purchasing the house. After two years as Farm Advisor, Orin took a position as Land Appraiser for a local bank at an increase in salary of about $100 a month.
